San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area

17 miles from Katie's Cabins - 36 minutes

Bird Lovers and nature lovers ... this one's for you.  A large ribbon of hundred year old cottonwood trees mark this seemingly insignificant stretch of land along the San Pedro River.  Driving by, you would never know that these trees support 40% of the nesting Grey Hawks in the United States.  But should you park, and venture out along the network of trails, you are sure to see why the American Bird Conservancy designated this a Globally Important Bird Area.   The Riparian provides a habitat that is rare in the Southwest, creating an ideal location for over 250 species of migrating and wintering birds and a migratory corridor that sees more than 4 million birds each year.

Mammoth Kill SiteThis 56,000 acre preserve has a network of wonderful hiking trails.  Adventure to abandoned mining camps and ghost towns as well as a prehistoric kill site where the Arizona State Museum excavated the bones of twelve mammoths as well as butchering tools and features of a fire hearth.
